In moments of reflection…
Some numbers speak for themselves. Forty years with the same company is certainly one of them. But beyond the number itself, what truly matters is the story behind it: the people, the decisions, and, above all, the impact we leave on those who share the journey with us.
My boss just celebrated 40 years with the company. Basically, the same number of years I’ve been alive. And beyond how incredible that fact is to me, there are a few things I want to highlight because, to me, they are much more important.
In a corporate world where we are often focused on what comes next, the next position, the next step in our careers—and perhaps, sometimes, in a way that is a little more self-centered than we would like to admit—ever since I’ve known him, and perhaps also because of where he is in his career, he has always put people first, beyond the numbers.
And yes, we work in an organization where we constantly focus on productivity, efficiency, and reducing costs, and we know that people are often among the first to be affected. But in his case, that has not been the way.
For many years, I’ve said that we have a leadership gap, in the broadest sense of the word. And to me, he is a very good example of what a leader is: someone who acts according to what he says, and you can see it. Of course, sometimes that comes with his very particular way of approaching things. But at the end of the day, we all have our own style.
Without a doubt, one of the best things that has happened to me in my professional career has been realizing that there are still leaders who genuinely care about their people.
And yes, perhaps in the past it seemed easier to stay with one company for so many years, while today it feels much easier to move from one organization to another. Maybe I’m part of a generation that still believes in being loyal to what lies behind a company, and not just to an endless career of climbing the corporate ladder.
Because growth is always a good thing. It challenges us, pushes us forward, and makes us learn.
But there are many other ways to grow, and perhaps some of them come with the maturity that only time can bring.
To keep growing, to keep learning, and, above all, to keep enjoying what we do—always in a professional way.
Forty years are much more than a number. They represent a story, a way of doing things, and, above all, the impact you have had on the people who have had the opportunity to work with you. And to me, that is what is truly worth celebrating.
